This is 1 of 5 boards in this style and wood combo. I typically only work with 4/4 (1" thick) lumber as 8/4 (2" thick) hardwood can be quite costly. I've made this style of board before all with 4/4 oak and it's always been a hit so when I saw my supplier got in stock of 8/4" white oak, I submitted to my temptation to get some and the final results did not disappoint. I love the way the end grain looks in the thicker boards. White oak is an excellent wood to use in a cutting board as it's a closed pore wood. Unlike red oak which is an open pore. A few years ago I built a big board entirely out of reclaimed white oak and it's still in my kitchen getting used nearly every day so I can attest to the longevity and durability of an oak board.

This particular board has some hints of blue/grey discolouration. White oak is a tannin-rich wood and when it comes in contact with metal, specifically iron, it has a chemical reaction that creates the blue/black colouring. This might have been caused by a fastener that was driven into the tree at some point or a blade that was used on it along the way. This colouration might also be the beginning signs of spalting or mineral deposits. At this point, it's virtually impossible to narrow down what caused it but the wood itself is structurally sound and I believe simply adds to the character of the overall board.

Because of new Canada–U.S. border rules that kicked in recently, shipping costs have gone up a bit. I’ve done my best to keep them as low as possible while still making sure everything stays easy and stress-free on your end.

All orders now ship Delivered Duties Paid (DDP) — which means all duties, taxes, and customs fees are already included in the shipping charge. Once you place your order, that’s it — no surprise bills, no extra steps, no headaches.

Your board will ship, clear customs smoothly, and show up at your door ready to use (or gift) without you needing to do a thing.
