This is 1/6 boards that I made out of some salvaged, 4" thick maple that came straight out of an old growth forest right here on Vancouver Island. The bookmatched end grain is simply remarkable. This maple had the perfect amount of spalting. Not enough to compromise the structural integrity of the wood but just enough to enhace the grain with some wild character. The bird's eye maple on the edges is simply the cherry on top. To find and work with wood with grain like this is rare. It was a memorable experience to transform and help this wood find a new life and it really is a neat opportunity to have a piece of the mystical forests of the Pacific Northwest as a functional art piece in your home.
